Onlive coming to the UK
Onlive has said that it will finally turn up in the UK before the year is out.
Onlive, a service that allows gamers to play game titles as they download them, said that one of the most common questions its support team gets asked is when the service will come to the UK, adding that it would give a "very vague answer". So, true to its word with less than pinpoint accuracy Onlive said that it will launch in the UK "sometime between September 21st and December 12st of this year".
The confidence of Onlive was on display when it boldly said, "Onlive UK's launch is expected to go very smoothly, since most of the major kinks in the service have been worked out already in the United States. The company has established a great working partnership with UK ISP British Telecommunications (BT). BT has exclusive rights to include OnLive in their broadband packages, and have already began trials of the service with a few lucky members." One has to wonder whether Onlive likes to tempt fate.
When Onlive does launch in the UK, it will do so with over 100 titles in its games library. Onlive CEO Steve Perlman said that Onlive will have "full compatibility across a wide range of HDTVs, tablet/smartphone devices and most PCs and Macs, as well as a wide range of exclusive social features".
Flogging games over the internet has become big business, with many companies following Valve's lead. Electronic Arts (EA) has announced that it will be opening Origin, a games application store that will peddle EA's latest and greatest games, including limited edition copes of its titles. Given the size and library of EA games, it's hard to see how Origin can become anything other than a cash cow for EA.
As for Onlive, its future will surely be in licensing its games streaming technology to firms such as EA and Valve for use in their games stores. Nevertheless, BT subscribers might be in line for a nice treat when Onlive finally comes to the UK, if they're willing to pony up the extra cash.
