Sony has taken the first significant step from an end-user's standpoint in restoring the Playstation Network as a new firmware update is now available to download.
The mandatory firmware update 3.61 is available to download now and PSN subscribers will be required to change their password. The password can only be changed on the Playstation 3 that the PSN account was created on. The other option is have an email sent to the email address that the account was registered that will contain the link to change the password.
